The best family backpack of 2025: Hugo 3.0 – Functional, easy to clean, robust and ideal for parents
Hugo isn't an alcoholic beverage or a PlayStation game to us. Caro sewed her first family backpack herself and named it Hugo without giving it much thought. Now the Hugo Family has over 4,000 members, and Hugo has been further developed into its third generation. And this blog post is all about that generation: Hugo 3.0, the best family backpack ever!

What exactly makes a backpack a family backpack?
As parents, we have a bit more to carry, literally. That's why it's so handy to have a bag for all that extra stuff. For everything you need when you have kids. In our blog post "Can you use a regular bag as a diaper bag?", we've compared and detailed the differences between the two.
In principle, you can use anything as a family backpack. But the real question is: "Is this practical for me?" A family backpack shouldn't be an extra burden, quite the opposite! As they say, carrying is love. This applies not only to carrying babies or our children's worries and fears, but also to carrying things.
A family backpack by parents for parents
After the birth of her second child in 2017, Caro sewed her first family backpack. She was looking for something practical for everyday life with children. It shouldn't look particularly babyish, and it should still be usable after the diaper-changing stage. She immediately put her idea into action: Her sewing machine sat on an IKEA dining table, next to her laptop with YouTube tutorials and countless scraps of fabric, strips, and webbing... all accompanied by poor lighting. Pure chaos. As she secured the last seam, she thought, "Well, that turned out pretty well for the first time, I'll leave it like this." Her husband, Sebastian, nodded his approval while sitting in front of the TV, and that was the end of the family backpack project. For now.
So many parents now wear Hugo, and we constantly ask for your ideas and suggestions for improvements. A community of 23,800 people on Instagram is now developing products for parents with us.

From Hugo 2.0 to Hugo 3.0: What has changed and why?
In the summer of 2020, we asked for your feedback on Instagram and received many messages. Afterwards, we sat down and discussed your suggestions, tried out many things, and had new prototypes made. The result is the best family backpack we've ever developed, and we now want to show you in detail what has changed!
Finally, a family backpack with an external bottle compartment!
One of the first changes we had to implement for and with you was the external bottle compartment. The demand from the community grew steadily: the new Hugo needed an external bottle compartment.

Even distribution of the bottle nets
To ensure that the weight of your Hugo is evenly distributed on both sides, we have separated the two bottle nets inside and placed one of them on the left side.
At your request: zipper for the front compartment and key clip.
The front compartment now has a water-repellent zipper and is also equipped with a key clip. Now nothing will get in, and you can immediately access your car keys without having to open the backpack.

The best family backpack now has a chest strap.
We listened to you, and even though we always avoided it: Hugo 3.0 now has an adjustable chest strap . This makes carrying your weekly groceries home much easier. If you don't need it, you can simply remove the chest strap.
A larger compartment for mobile phones on the family backpack
You've probably noticed that cell phones are getting bigger and bigger. We've made the smartphone compartment on the outside of the Hugo larger, so now even newer phones fit and can be accessed without taking the Hugo off.

The thing about sustainability
You've probably read this on our website or on Instagram: We want to shape a new generation of parents. Mindful consumption is an important step for us towards a more sustainable family life. It's important to us that we can use the things we have for as long as possible. That's why our Hugo is made of durable Cordura (the same fabric used for motorcycle and military clothing) and super robust and stable recycled polyester (light grey & sand).
If you're looking for a family backpack that you can later use for work or everyday life without the kids, then the Hugo 3.0 is the best family backpack around. 😊
PS: The chest strap is part of the standard accessories forHugo 3.0 , as are the stroller suspension and the wet bag.
